The Artist in Residence Programme of Közelítés Művészeti Egyesület / Approach Art Association, Pécs has been supported on a permanent base between 2009 and 2011 by the Cultural Capital of Europe Programme Pécs 2010. Within the cavalcade of events the resident project became one of the few professional programmes, which aimed at deepening the artistic creative activity, building an international network, and overcoming the deficiencies of an institutional structure in order to become compatible with international trends. The programme is not without preliminaries: in 2003-2004 thanks to the Culture 2000 Programme of the European Commission we have operated already an atelier-exchange project in cooperation with Icelandic, French and German art organisations: Galeri@Hlemmur, DOKU München.

In 2009 with the sponsorship of the city and again that of the EU we invited three artists - Sandro Porcu, Tonka Malekovic, Markus Hiestleitner – for a one, or two months resident work related to our Temporary City project.

In 2009-2010 and up to April 2011 the operation of the programme has been secured by the competitive bids on invitation of the European Cultural Capital Programme. The project did not only aim at the resident work of foreign artists in Pécs, but became extended to support the resident projects of Hungarian artists abroad too. The artistic programme element has been complemented by the Curator in Residence element.

The Curator in Residence programme considered basically one or bimonthly stays, however we managed a good number of shorter projects ranging from a few days to several weeks.

During the last two years more than twenty artists and seven curators participated in the resident programme.

The Artists in Residence are the following:

The way of participation
i)          applications in response to international calls (supported by ACAX)
ii)         inter-institutional co-operation exchange agreements (Contratype Brussels, Interspace Sofia, Apartman project Istanbul, Residency Unlimited New York, Ostrale Dresden)
The latter choices were also competitive: the sender party recommended and also prejudged the applicants, thus in general the recipient party choose the Artist in Residence out of five persons

Specific features of the Pécs Artist in Residence programme
-civic environment
The resident programme has been elaborated and managed by a competent local project owner NGO Approach Art Association. AAA cooperated with the Art Faculty of Pécs University and other professional organisations (societies, museums, institutions in art and culture)

-ex-institutional status
Although building five ateliers with an overall floor area of 900 sqm had been planned in the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter / ZSCQ with inauguration in 2009, than 2010, the final project does not include these.
(Note: ZSCQ is one of the five key projects of the Pécs 2010 programme, which since 2005 included among others the concept of a contemporary art institute. This project component included the resident project elements. The two concepts had been excluded together from the project.)
-lack of permanent estate, specific to aims
The resident artists had been accommodated in rented apartments, temporary ateliers, studios.

-relation to own initiatives
The the call for applications of the Artist in Residence programme declared a concept focusing on the relation between ‘temporality’ and the ‘changing city’. The applicant artists in their work-programmes had to react to this situation. During the project period the resident artists held a portfolio presentation at the local Art Faculty, furthermore we organised individual or joint work-exhibitions for them as well.

On two occasions the resident artists joined key events organised by us / AAA:
            - the Temporary City project mentioned above (curated by Attila Doboviczki and Rira Varga)
            - the In-Between sequence of events (by Carlo Crovato and Ilona Németh, curated by Christian Gracza and Allan Siegel)

According to chances and needs we organised a number of professional meetings with leaders of prestigious local and national institutions, respected curators and artists.
